Physicians with Heart: Dr. Andrea Kropf

Dr. Andrea Kropf knew from a very young age that she wanted to be a pediatric physician. During her residency at Emory University School of Medicine, working in pediatrics, she had the benefit of great mentors who piqued her interest in pediatric cardiology. She then spent time on service teams at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Heart Center and the outpatient cardiology clinics at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Cardiology  during residency and knew from that moment she wanted to be a pediatric cardiologist.

Dr. Kropf explains, “Cardiac pathophysiology is extremely interesting, but my favorite aspect is the relationships with patients and their families – from fetal life to adulthood. I jumped at the opportunity to join the team at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Cardiology. My husband and I both grew up in the Atlanta area and we are happy to be back! I feel connected to this community in a special way and feel like my career has come full circle. I now treat kids that go to the same pediatric practice that I went to as a child – the one that made me want to be a pediatrician.”

One of the things Dr. Kropf loves most about her job with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Cardiology is that every day is a little different. “I do a mix of outpatient clinic, hospital consults, and fetal cardiology. Some days I see all teenagers in clinic and other days I see mostly babies in the hospital. As a practice, we go out into the community to deliver care where it is needed. That means that if a baby is born with a cardiac concern, we will personally come to the hospital where the child is to evaluate the infant,” she shares. “I also do fetal cardiology, which represents a major change in the care of babies with heart disease. We now are able to catch many heart conditions before a baby is born. This allows us to start educating and preparing families early, and also allows for prompt treatment once the baby is born.”

When asked what makes Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Cardiology a unique and special place for families, Dr. Kropf explains,

It’s the dedication to excellent patient care at every level.  Children’s Cardiology epitomizes a culture of respect, compassion, and teamwork. From the moment a family calls to make an appointment, we are going to give your child the best care and be with you through every step. A heart diagnosis is extremely scary, and we are going to help your family navigate all the ups and downs.”

Caring for children with heart conditions has shaped the way Dr. Kropf approaches life. She continues, “Our heart families’ strength is inspiring. Seeing the continued optimism and love our families exhibit on a daily basis in the face of adversity reminds me to appreciate the small things.”

Dr. Kropf’s experience as a wife and parent of three little girls allows her to relate well to the families she cares for. “Caring for children means caring for the entire family, and in my somewhat biased opinion, makes this the most rewarding career.”

Dr. Kropf provides pediatric cardiac consultations at more than 20 hospitals in Georgia as a part of our City Call Program. She also practices at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Cardiology’s Alpharetta and Cumming clinics where she provides outpatient cardiology services to patients as well as fetal echocardiology for expectant mothers to confirm or rule out any heart issues prenatally as a part of our Fetal Cardiology Program.
