According to pediatric cardiologist Cyrus Samai, MD, one of the most important things Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Cardiology brings to Georgia families is its focus on improving access to top quality cardiac care across the state.

By hiring pediatric cardiologists and opening cardiac clinics in areas like Thomasville, Valdosta, Dalton, Oconee and Albany, children with complex cardiac issues can receive the best care without having to frequently travel to metro Atlanta, he said. Dr. Samai also works as a member of the City Call Program team, which connects metro Atlanta’s hospitals and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Heart Center. With a staff of 18 physicians, the City Call program provided more than 4,500 consultations, 5,000 echo reads and 100 fetal consultations last year.

“By hiring people who have the expertise to treat complex cardiac issues in children specifically and who live and work outside of metro Atlanta, we improve the quality of and access to care across the state dramatically,” Dr. Samai said.

Interested in working with kids from a young age, he became fascinated with the physiology of the cardiac system in medical school, and a pediatric cardiologist was born.

“People here are committed to taking care of kids and giving 100 percent, but they also really like to work as a team,” Dr. Samai said. “Our jobs are meaningful because what we do allows children to live to their full potential. It’s what we’re here for.”

When Dr. Samai completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship in Michigan, he didn’t imagine he’d be moving to the South, but 19 years later, he’s made Atlanta his home. He said he enjoys being active by running, swimming, golfing, hiking, and spending time with his family including his children, who are 10 and 12.
